Today Lucy and I took a little walk to the Des Moines Art Center and through Greenwood Park. She loved the Three Cairns by Andy Goldsworthy. I love Goldsworthy's work so much. There is an amazing piece at the National Gallery of Art in DC. I saw it last October and just fell in love.
Actually, I love art in general. It was a pleasure to share it with Lucy. She loved it. She told Scott that today "I saw culptures and paintins." So cute. She also was making a poem about Maya Lin and a hot dog and a violin in a park. She thought it was hilarious that she figured out that Maya Lin rhymes with violin.
We sat and watched them take down an exhibit and move a 400 pound piece of art. We also ran into our neighbor, Kim, who is a current docent. We admired all the different architecture, walked up the glass staircase in the Meier wing and took the gigantic elevator. We talked to a few guards and laughed over the Tuttle.
I can't pick my favorite work at DMAC because I can't narrow to just one. I love the Calder mobile, the Ellsworth Kelly Yellow and Blue, Lichtenstein's pyramids, Richter, Debuffet, and Maya Lin's Rock Field gives me chills of happiness. I miss being in the art center frequently as a docent. That was such a great experience. I quit doing it because I went to law school, but then I quit law school to stay at home and homeschool... Am I a quitter or a dabbler? I always wonder that about myself.
Tonight I had another ceramics class so I got to be there twice in one day. Being close to the art center is one of the biggest reasons why I moved to this neighborhood and one of the reasons why I didn't really want to move too much!
I am challenging myself to blog every day for a month. I'm not going to really edit or perfect, but just get my thoughts and reflections of the day out there. The days seem to be going so fast and I want to capture some of what's happening, even if it's just a small bit.
I love art. So much. Going to an art museum or an old cathedral or ruin fills me with happiness more than almost anything (well, except prairies and oceans). There's something about the work of human hands that gives me such a huge feeling of hope and wonder. Humans are wonders of this earth. I suppose I'm speciesist, but it's true. I am in awe of what we can accomplish, the pride we take in our work, the creativity and craftsmanship we can display. I'm glad I got to share that with Lucy today.
